Maclura pomifera

aka Osage Orange. An oddball Texas tree of the Mulberry family with strange fruit reminiscent of a yellow-green brain. Little is known about the fruit's dispersal mechanism, as the fruit is not preferred (but non toxic) to animals.  Adaptable to many soils, including our heavy clay, with a long history of use and cultivation by Indigenous peoples and settlers spreading it though much of state. Very drought tolerant.
