Aesculus pavia, Scarlet Buckeye

Showy scarlet blooms in spring draw the eye - plus hummingbirds. While Scarlet Buckeye is a showy spring bloomer it does go dormant in summer so place thoughtfully. Normally grows at edges of woods receiving shade from hottest sun. Native east coast through Texas into the Edwards Plateau. Best in deep soils. Not so much a tree as large, wide spreading shrub that can reach tree like heights.
